“THE EVIL EYE”
Dating back to Western Asia 3rd millennium B.C., many ancient cultures developed strong respect for the penetrative & mysterious powers of the eye. There was a widespread that eye contact with certain beings or deities could result in illness, misfortune, and even death.
In response, ancient artisans carved protective eye beads, such as this one. This was meant to look back at the evil eye, and to counteract its deadly deeds.
